fire heros

On April 4th Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman, City Councilman Bob Coffin and the other City Council members along with CLV Fire Chief, William McDonald as they honored our Veterans Village staff “Fire Rescue Heroes” Wendy Grant, Steven Parker and Jeff Stone at a City Council meeting earlier this week.

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) — Charles Akiviana is in critical condition but he is alive, thanks to employees at the apartment complex where he lives.

A fire broke out in his unit Wednesday morning at the Veteran’s Village Apartments on Las Vegas Boulevard South, near East Charleston Boulevard.

According to Las Vegas Fire & Rescue, the fire was reported just before 9 a.m.

Greg Brannon and Wendy Grant are crisis intervention specialists who work at the complex, and Jeff Pangburn and Steve Parker are maintenance workers there.

They heard the smoke alarms and went door-to-door to find which unit was in trouble. Then they saw smoke billowing out of apartment 202. They found Akiviana on the floor behind the door.

While some immediately began using fire extinguishers, the others managed to get him to safety.

Firefighters discovered heavy fire upon arrival but were able to put it out in five minutes. They have determined it was an accidental fire caused by careless smoking.

They said if not for the smoke alarms, Akiviana would likely have died in the fire.

Akiviana was taken to the burn unit at University Medical Center with third degree burns to both legs and smoke inhalation.

Damage was estimated at $25,000.
